World’s Largest CA Comodo and Web Hosting Platform Leader cPanelJoin Forces to Enable Automated SSL Encryption for the Web
Achievement pivots on AutoSSL, now
100 percent available to cPanel’s 72 million active domains
CLIFTON, N.J. and HOUSTON—Dec. 8, 2016 — Today, 90 percent of all websites do not have SSL encryption, putting their customers’ sensitive information at risk. To remedy this widespread vulnerability, cPanel, Inc., the web hosting platform leader with 72 million active domains, has introduced AutoSSL to automatically issue SSL certificates to its web hosting partners’ websites.
AutoSSL is available to all customers running cPanel & WHM version 60 or later. The company has already issued more than 5.8 million certificates in November, the first month of its phased-in rollout.
To achieve this massive scale of certificate issuance, securing 240,000 websites a day, cPanel selected Comodo, the largest Certificate Authority (CA) in the world, currently securing over 38 million fully qualified domains.
“We’re providing encryption through Domain Validated cPanel certificates at no additional charge to the cost of our software because we think it’s that important to secure the internet,” said cPanel CEO J. Nick Koston. “Our goal is to help build a more secure internet, and to get there, we’d like all of our existing customers to enable AutoSSL. We encourage anyone, not currently using cPanel & WHM version 60 or later, to switch or upgrade in order to take advantage of AutoSSL.”
AutoSSL is an automation feature included with cPanel & WHM version 60 and later. It discovers and deploys DV cPanel SSL certificates automatically to all websites, logins and endpoints on the server.
In addition to protecting websites, AutoSSL enables SSL on areas of cPanel and WHM that need encryption. This includes admin-based logins, email and internally running services. AutoSSL also renews expiring certificates. Protecting the privacy, security and trust of websites is now a “fire and forget” event.
“The entire internet needs to be secure, encrypted and trusted,” said Michael Fowler, president for Comodo CA. “Because of this, we are excited that the cPanel partnership allows us to secure millions of websites.”
Comodo creates trust online providing encryption through Domain Validated (DV) certificates, as well as Organizationally Validated (OV) and Extended Validation (EV) certificates, which both offer identity authentication of the website owner in addition to encryption. Authentication is important as users need to be aware of who is receiving their encrypted information.
