Comodo Introduces Memory Guardian to Protect Consumers Against Buffer Overflow Attacks
Free Comodo Memory Guardian (now in BETA) provides consumers even more protection against malware that can infect PCs
Jersey City, NJ (August 30, 2007) – In response to the proliferation of various hacker methods and techniques, Comodo, a global leader in Identity and Trust Assurance Management solutions, announced today that the BETA version of Comodo Memory Guardian is now available for download. This solution is designed to protect against buffer overflow attacks where hackers inject malware into user’s PCs, as the type of attack recently reported involving Yahoo Messenger. In this attack, hackers compromised the Yahoo Messenger application when consumers accepted a webcam invitation (for more information on this attack, please see Information Week, August 15, 2007).
Comodo Memory Guardian prevents damage from most types of buffer overflow attacks, which is when a malicious program or script deliberately sends more data to its memory buffer than the buffer can handle, causing a crash. It is at this point that a successful attack can create a back door to the system though which a hacker can gain access. The goal of most attacks is to install malware onto the compromised PC whereby the hacker can reformat the hard drive, steal sensitive user information, or even install programs that transform the machine into a zombie PC.
Comodo Memory Guardian is reliable protection against this form of attack and has been effective at stopping 90%+ of these types of attacks. Comodo Memory Guardian is expected to be available for general release later this year.
“I’m pleased that Comodo is able to help protect consumers against many types of hacker attacks,” said Melih Abdulhayoglu, CEO and Chief Security Architect of Comodo. “Comodo’s strong reputation within the realm of desktop security, combined with our ability to address many types of threats should help pave the way for stronger consumer threat protection.”
